Back To School Tips

Moving into a new school year can be a big adjustment! Here are some Tips & Tricks to help ease that transition...

~Establish a schedule and do your best to stick to a regular bedtime & morning routine so that your little one is well rested and ready to learn & play at school!

~Talk to your student openly and answer their questions. Ask them how they feel, what they are excited about, if they are nervous or have anything they want to share with you. Also feel free to share your own school stories with them! Remind them that they will always see you again after school and that their teacher will help them if they are feeling sad.

~Be enthusiastic about school! Even if you are feeling a little bit sad or nervous for your child's first day, smile, remind them how much fun it will be and  do your best to show them how excited you are for their new adventure!

~Shop for school supplies together and let your child help to pick out supplies or maybe even a special shirt to wear on their first day

~Bring an item from home. Does your child have a blanket, doll or toy that might help make that initial day a little bit easier?  Try picking out something special to send in just for the the first day to ease those jitters.

~Visit your local library and read stories together about going to school! Some great stories about the 1st day include:
The Kissing Hand Audrey Penn
Pete The Cat: Rocking In My School Shoes Eric Litwin
David Goes To School David Shannon
It’s Time for Preschool Esme Raj Codell
Will I Have a Friend? Miriam CohenFirst Day of School  Anne Rockwell

~Talk with your student's teacher! Be honest and open with your child's teacher to ensure that this transition can be as smooth as possible!
It is totally normal for both children and caregivers to feel a little sad or anxious about the first day and to have many questions. Just remember that with time, you will all feel comfortable with this adjustment.
